A classic artefact of modern monetary history, the Zimbabwe 10 Trillion Dollars note, is one of the most recognised denominations from the country’s hyperinflation era. Issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and dated HARARE 2008, this banknote belongs to the late-stage “third dollar” series, produced as prices accelerated so rapidly that ever-higher denominations were required simply to keep everyday commerce functioning.

Although dated 2008, the 10 trillion denomination was released into circulation on 16 January 2009, alongside other extreme high values. By this point, emergency production and paper supply constraints meant many notes from this period were printed with simplified security, and the 10 trillion is commonly encountered on non-watermarked paper.

The note features the familiar Zimbabwean design language of the era. The obverse displays the iconic balancing rock formation associated with the “Domboremari / Chiremba” motif, framed by indigenous landscape elements and bilingual titling. The reverse presents architectural and cultural symbolism, depicting the Reserve Bank Tower and imagery referencing the historic Great Zimbabwe ruins, reinforcing national identity during a period of severe economic instability. The note was produced in Harare by Fidelity Printers and Refiners and bears the signature of Dr Gideon Gono, then Governor of the Reserve Bank.

Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation reached extraordinary levels in 2008–2009, making denominations such as this 10 trillion note necessary in daily transactions. The series was later demonetised, with official exchange windows closing in September 2015. Under the Reserve Bank’s demonetisation conversion terms for the 2008 note series, Z$250 trillion equated to US$1, meaning a 10 trillion note was officially valued at US$0.04 during the final exchange process.
