1646 Charles I Newark Siege Halfcrown
Charles I (1625-49), silver Newark siege Halfcrown, Obverse, Royal crown, C to left, R to right, denomination below in Roman numerals, beaded border. Reverse depicting three line inscription and date, OBS: / NEWARK / 1646, (Bull 688; N.2638; S.3140A).
As the new year at that time did not commence until 25 March, the coins dated 1646 could only have been issued between 25 March and, at the latest, 6 May, the date of Newark’s surrender. In reality, the issue of 1646 coins was likely for a shorter period, perhaps no more than forty days, making it a very brief final siege issue.
Graded XF45 by NGC, this coin represents an exceptional and rare example of this highly sought-after coinage. Unfortunately, the available images do not do it justice; in hand, it is a truly stunning and impressive piece.
